All primary schools, including special schools, and post-primary schools must report annually on student non-attendance in primary and post-primary schools at an aggregated level. This data is collected by Tusla Education Support Service (TESS). Schools make two returns to TESS, the Annual Attendance Report (AAR) and the School Absence Report (SAR).

This information is available on the Tusla website at: www.tusla.ie/services/educational-welfareservices/publications/research-and-statistics/

Set out below, in tabular form is the most recent published data. The figures for the 2018/2019 school year are included for context as this is the last full school year pre Covid 19 public health measures.

Expulsions Primary Post Primary Special School settings(primary)
2018-2019 22 151 7
2019 -2020 7 61 3
2020-2021 7 55 1

The AAR/SAR report for the 2022/23 school year will be published shortly. Data for 2024 and 2025 is being collected and collated and will be published in due course.
