The State purchased Farmleigh House and Estate in 1999 for the purpose of establishing an official guest house for visiting Heads of State and other high level visitors. The house and estate were refurbished and modernised with high level security installed, to be suitable for this purpose.
The Department of An Taoiseach oversees all official use, State visits and official activities at Farmleigh. The OPW's role is to ensure the ongoing operation and presentation of the estate providing the appropriate services as required by the Department of An Taoiseach and the State, to the highest standards.
The following table shows the number of all State visits to Farmleigh, arranged by year since 2001. The table includes the number of delegations which have stayed overnight each year since 2021.
