449. To ask the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform the actions taken by the OPW to date to secure a car park and access to Castletown House from a centre (details supplied), given that the centre is willing to provide use of its own car park at weekends; and if he will make a statement on the matter. 450. To ask the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform if the OPW has applied to Kildare County Council for planning permission for a car park for weekday parking on Castletown estate adjacent to and directly beside a centre (details supplied); if not, to confirm that this workaround is being considered; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I propose to take Questions Nos. 449 and 450 together.

The OPW is progressing plans to provide a car parking facility for visitors to Castletown House on lands adjoining the historic demesne.

As the Deputy will be aware, this is a complex issue. There has been a detailed process of engagement between the OPW and all of the stakeholders at Castletown over the last eighteen months, including various community groups, the local authority and the private landowner. As the newly appointed Minister for the OPW I am working with my officials to be fully briefed on this issue and I look forward to working constructively with elected members from Kildare towards a positive solution which will benefit the community, the visitors to Castletown, the staff of Castletown but most importantly will ensure that this iconic national heritage site is correctly conserved and protected for the enjoyment of generations to come.
