My Department does not hold data in relation to solar PV developments. Planning statistics are compiled by each planning authority on an annual basis for collation and publication on my Department’s website at the following link:

www.gov.ie/en/collection/6e88b-planning-statistics/

The data collected relates to the total number of applications and decisions for all developments that require planning permission, broken down by year and planning authority.

However, granular data, such as the number of decisions in respect of solar energy developments by county, is not specifically collected and consequently is not available in my Department. Such information may be sought directly from the relevant planning authority.

In October 2022, my Department introduced planning regulations to amend and enhance the existing planning exemptions for rooftop solar installations. Consequently, certain rooftop solar PV developments do not require planning permission and would not be captured in planning authority statistics.
