My Department provides funding for a number of alternative education settings, operating outside of the recognised school system, that provide education to children and young people who have dropped out of mainstream education. These settings are listed in Table 1 below.

Alternative education settings vary in structure and design but provide an important service for a small cohort of children and young people, who are referred from a range of sources, including the Education Welfare Service.

Action 88 of the DEIS Plan, published in 2017, undertook to carry out a review of current out of school and second chance provision to inform future supports in this area, including those provided through TUSLA. The review was carried out by a Working Group chaired by my department and comprised of representatives from stakeholders including the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, Tusla, Solas, Education and Training Boards Ireland and the National Educational Psychological Service. This review was informed through the use of questionnaires, submissions from stakeholders and a public consultation process, including consultation with students.

The review report was published in May 2022 and is available at The report includes a list of alternative education settings in operation at the time the review was carried out. I have included a list at Table 2 below of the settings named in the review report where my department has no direct involvement. Some of these settings may have closed since that review took place.

iScoil is a registered charity which is currently jointly funded by the Presentation Sisters and my department. It provides educational supports to children and young people who are either eligible for, or are already receiving, support from my department under the medical strand of the Special Education Home Tuition Grant Scheme. My department funds 180 iScoil places in 2025.
