The Deputy raises an interesting question; however, it is important to clarify that public transport services are funded through current expenditure and public transport infrastructure is funded through capital expenditure and there are clear rules in place under Public Financial Procedures as regards the distinction between the two streams of funding.

The Programme for Government commits toward both improving public transport services, developing a sustainable funding model for PSO services into the future, and reviewing and enhancing the NDP funding envelope to deliver on existing, strategically important transport infrastructure commitments and meet the funding needs of new and accelerated potential projects and programmes.

I do believe that public transport needs to be affordable; while, we also need to expand public transport services, improve the reliability of existing public transport services and commence construction on the major public transport projects we need to deliver that strategic public transport network committed to by the Programme for Government.
