195. To ask the Minister for Health when the holders of degrees in athletic therapy from Dublin City University will be automatically accepted, as is the case under the Health and Care Professionals Council in the UK, to qualify for a Masters in physiotherapy in University College Dublin and University of Galway; and the reason CORU is taking so long to recognise this. It should be noted that the profession mentioned (athletic therapist) is not a regulated profession either in Ireland or the UK and therefore does not come under the regulatory control of either CORU (Ireland's multi-profession health regulator) or the HCPC (the UK’s multi-profession health regulator).

The Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science (FHERIS) have confirmed that the entry requirements for admission to courses in higher education institutions in Ireland are determined by the institutions themselves as they are legally autonomous and academically independent. The Minister for FHERIS has no function therefore in setting admissions criteria.

If further clarification on the matters raised is required please do not hesitate to get in touch.
