Barryscourt Castle will reopen to the public in April 2025, with the season running until late August 2025. Visitors will have access to the ground floor of the Castle and Tower House, with guided tours available for the upper floors. The restored Castle will host a number of educational events throughout the 2025 season, including a series of talks and concerts. Entry will be free for the initial re-opening season while some remaining works are completed.
The site was closed in 2016 due to significant damp penetration issues, necessitating extensive repointing, re-grouting, and additional fabric repairs to prevent future water ingress. The Office of Public Works specialist teams and master craftsmen have undertaken this ambitious conservation project on the Castle's outer walls, interior, and battlements. This project also included a comprehensive mechanical and electrical upgrade, featuring new heating and lighting systems to ensure the building's safety.
In collaboration with the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, the OPW is currently implementing a historic landscape plan to restore the historic garden at the Castle. This work will be ongoing for the 2025 season.
