316. To ask the Minister for Finance his plans for moving the ship Mathew MV, which is docked at Marina Point in Cork harbour, and if it will now be considered the responsibility of the Revenue Commissioners; and the way he intends to ensure that this asset is either realised or disposed of, and moved from Cork harbour. I am advised by Revenue that the MV Matthew, a Panamanian-registered bulk carrier, was detained in September 2023 as part of a joint operation between Revenue, An Garda Síochána and the Defence Forces during which 2.25 tonnes of cocaine was seized with an estimated value of more than €157m. The vessel was escorted to Marino Point in the Port of Cork and has remained berthed there since.

On 2 December 2024, the Special Criminal Court authorised the release of the MV Matthew thereby facilitating its disposal. It was not possible to commence any disposal process prior to this date. Revenue has consistently stated its intention to dispose of the vessel as soon as the legal position allowed.

In order to maximise the value of this disposal, Revenue has retained the services of a globally recognised provider of integrated shipping services with an international expertise, not just in in ship broking but also in finance, research, compliance and all aspects of international shipping. This engagement maximises, to the greatest extent possible, the market for potential purchasers of this vessel. This process is currently ongoing.

I am further advised that Revenue is also in discussions with the Marine Survey Office to ensure that it is compliant with maritime legislation and regulations in its efforts to dispose of and remove the vessel from Cork Harbour.
