As Minister for Transport, I have responsibility for overall policy and exchequer funding in relation to Greenways. In line with Section 32 (2) of the Roads Act 1993, the planning, design, and construction of individual Greenways is a matter for Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), in conjunction with the local authorities concerned. Investment in Greenway projects is also subject to the requirements of the Infrastructure Guidelines and necessary statutory approvals.

In 2024, Kerry County Council received an allocation of €10,450,000.00 for the development of Greenway projects. The 2025 allocations will be published in Q1 2025.

No reference to the ‘big river walk’ in Tralee was contained within the 2024 Greenways allocations booklet (which can be viewed at ). On that basis, this scheme is not currently contained within the Greenways programme managed by Transport Infrastructure Ireland.

The Tralee to Listowel greenway is a proposed 27km route that aims to link the Tralee to Fenit Greenway with the Listowel to Limerick Greenway. This scheme is currently at Phase 2: Options Selection of a defined eight stage process. A second public consultation took place in September 2024, it is anticipated that a preferred route corridor will be published in 2025.

The South Kerry Greenway is approximately 32km long and is divided into two projects, Glenbeigh to Cahersiveen and Cahersiveen to Reenard Point. The latter project is at a design and feasibility stage. The Glenbeigh to Cahirsiveen scheme is 27km long and is divided into separate lots – 10km of the scheme is currently under construction Kerry County Council. Enabling works are being progressed on other sections with design and build contracts being prepared. Land acquisition is also being progressed for this scheme. Further analysis is also required on historical structures located along the route.
