To ask the Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection if he will examine the retirement policies for various professions, specifically regarding the recent extension of retirement ages for guards, prison officers, firefighters, and in the case of a person (details supplied); and if there are plans to address the retirement age policies for other professions or provide any guidance on how those affected by these rules might be accommodated. My Department does not have a role in relation to the setting of retirement ages or policies in respect of any profession.
The Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) has responsibility for information provision, workplace advice, mediation, conciliation, adjudication, inspection and enforcement in relation to employment rights, equality and equal status matters and industrial relations. The WRC has published a a code of practice around the issue of longer working, giving guidance and setting out industrial relations best practice in managing the engagement between employers and employees in the run up to retirement age. The WRC is a body under the ageis of the Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment.
