221. To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality the update on a proposed new prison (details supplied); the current status of the project; the timelines involved; whether there has been consultation with local agencies on the project; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I can advise the Deputy that the Irish Prison Service held exploratory talks with the Department of Defence on the potential use of the Curragh Camp Military Prison. The IPS also engaged technical consultants to undertake a conditional survey and examination of the fabric of the buildings to identify any essential works which would be required to allow the prison to be used as a civilian prison.
A report by the consultants has since been received and the Irish Prison Service has now completed its review of the possibility of using the Curragh Military Prison as a civilian prison. The recommendations on foot of this review will be considered by my Department in due course.
