Conna Castle is under the management and ownership of the Office of Public Works (OPW). It is a five-storey tower house with several flights of stone steps leading to the upper floors. Previously, the Castle operated under a keyholder access arrangement, which was discontinued following the last significant phase of works. In recent years, various works have been carried out at Conna Castle, including repairs to window embrasures, the installation of safety grills, the removal of high-level hoists, and other general works in line with best conservation practices. It is anticipated that Phase 2 will focus on exterior machicolation repairs and the installation of a temporary timber lintel, with additional works planned as needed.

The OPW welcomes a meeting with representatives from the local Conna community to discuss possible access options for the Castle. This meeting will focus on reaching an agreement and understanding on a way forward. In the meantime, the surrounding woodland park remains fully open to the public, offering a scenic and accessible area for visitors. Additionally, the grounds surrounding the Castle are available for events through a permissions application process, subject to terms and conditions. Information on how to apply can be found on the Heritage Ireland website.

Officials from the OPW will contact your office to arrange a meeting, as requested, with a small delegation from the community.
