The 1926 Census was taken on the night of 18 April 1926 and is the next full set of census records available in Ireland following the 1911 and 1901 censuses. The National Archives, in collaboration with the CSO, is preparing the 1926 Census for publication.

Cataloguing, conservation, digitisation and transcription of the 1.5 million census returns is underway. This work is on track for completion in time for public release next year, on 18 April 2026.

Funding has been allocated for the significant volume of work required to prepare the 1926 Census for online publication. Since 2022 €1,235,000 has been spent on this work, including €30,000 in 2025 to date. The digitisation process is undertaken by the staff of the National Archives and approximately 40% of this work is complete.
