Doctors intending to pursue registration with the Medical Council in the general or trainee specialist division may be required to sit the Pre-Registration Examination System (PRES).

The PRES examinations are primarily a test of knowledge and clinical skills in the main clinical disciplines of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, Surgery, and Medicine/General Practice.

The examinations are comprised of two elements – the PRES Level 2 and the PRES Level 3. The PRES Level 2 is a written exam comprised of multiple-choice questions. The PRES Level 3 is a clinical based assessment of communication, interpretation and practical skills.

The numbers sitting the exam and the pass rate for each respective year are set out in the table below.

2020 2021 2022 2023 2024
Doctors who sat the PRES Level 2 * * * 43 113
Pass Rate of PRES Level 2 (% Passed) * * * 37% 52%
Doctors who sat the PRES Level 3 ** 54 77 87 84
Pass Rate of PRES Level 3 (% Passed) ** 87% 65% 75% 73%
* The Medical Council restarted holding the PRES Level 2 exam in May 2023 after a hiatus during which a number of internationally available alternative exams were (and still are) acceptable for the purposes of registration with the Medical Council.

**The PRES Level 3 exam was not held in 2020 due to the restrictions in place during the Covid-19 pandemic.
