135. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if his attention has been drawn to a recent case in which a car that was dangerous and not road worthy passed the NCT (details supplied); if he has engaged with the NCT on this and to report on these discussions; if he has considered revoking the licence of the private company that administers the NCT; what measures he plans to take to rectify this; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Under the Road Safety Authority Act 2006 the operation of the National Car Testing (NCT) service is the statutory responsibility of the Road Safety Authority. As Minister, I have no function in respect of operational or contractual matters. My officials have engaged with the RSA on various aspects of the NCT service, however, including quality control and monitoring.

In 2024, over 1.7 million full NCT tests were carried out, which marked the busiest year in the history of the service. Of the NCT certificates issued, I am assured by the RSA that only a fraction of a per cent were subsequently revoked and that such instances mark rare and isolated incidents.

Given the RSA's responsibility in the specific matter raised, I have referred the question to the Authority for direct, detailed reply. I would ask the Deputy to contact my office if a response has not been received within ten days.
