103. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if all driver theory test centres are fully equipped and accessible for those who are living with dyslexia and have difficulty with written questions; if any theory test centres are temporarily or permanently without the necessary equipment to accommodate those who struggle with written questions; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Under the Road Safety Authority Act 2006, the Road Safety Authority (RSA) has statutory responsibility for the National Driver Testing Service. Given the RSA's responsibility in this matter, I have referred the question to the RSA for direct, detailed reply. Please contact my private office if a response is not received within ten days.
Pending this more detailed response, I am informed that the Driver Theory Test provider offers various options to accommodate candidates who may require special assistance to take their test. It is important that people should not be precluded from taking their driving theory test because they require special assistance. A voiceover option is available where the questions and answers are read out to the candidate over headphones. Additional time is also allowed for the candidate to take the test. There is also a reader recorder service whereby a staff member will read the questions and answer options to the candidate and record their answers on screen.
