GPs are independent practitioners. It is a matter for the treating GP to determine in the case of each individual patient what is proper and necessary care, including the prescribing of medicines. The circumstances around the cessation of prescribing medication in this case are not clear and it is suggested that the patient concerned discuss the matter directly with their GP.

Prescribers will use their clinical judgement to decide how long a prescription should be. Since 1 March 2024, prescribers, including GPs, can write prescriptions for patients for up to 12 months.
