Ireland does not at present intend to join the European Commission’s case at the Court of Justice of the European Union against Hungary in respect of the Sovereignty Protection Act (case C-829/24).

Ireland has consistently raised our concerns about Hungary’s Sovereignty Protection Act, and its negative impact on civil society space in Hungary, including the risk that the establishment and activities of the Sovereignty Protection Office will have a chilling effect on civil society and free and democratic debate in Hungary. We will continue to voice these concerns, including in direct contacts with our Hungarian interlocutors.

Ireland's Embassy in Budapest also works closely with several civil society organisations that work on the rule of law and minority rights in Hungary, and will continue to support their work.
