As the Deputy will appreciate, the Garda Commissioner is responsible by law for the management and administration of Garda business, including procurement of equipment.
I am informed that where appropriate Garda members are trained in handling firearms. As the Deputy will be aware, a safety holster is provided, as standard.
As the matter referred to by the Deputy is a the subject of a legal process, I am not in a position to respond further. However, I am informed that the device referred to is no longer in use by An Garda Síochána.

As the Deputy will be aware, under the Garda Síochána Act 2005 (as amended), the Garda Commissioner is responsible for the administration and management of An Garda Síochána, including for the recruitment, training and deployment of Garda members. As Minister, I have no role in such matters.
I am advised by the Garda authorities that, as of 31 January 2025, there are 20 Public Service Vehicle Inspectors nationwide. 18 Gardaí are included in this figure, with two Sergeants based in Galway and Mayo/Roscommon/Longford Divisions.
I am assured by the Garda Commissioner that personnel assigned throughout the country, together with overall policing arrangements and operational strategies, are continually monitored and reviewed. This ensures that optimum use is made of resources and the best possible policing service is provided to the public.
