The National Famine Commemoration is an opportunity for the Nation and the host community to reflect and remember the great suffering and loss of the Great Irish Famine. Since 2008, the event has taken place usually on a rotating basis in each of the provinces on the island of Ireland. The location of the annual National Famine Commemoration is typically announced in early spring each year.

The National Famine Commemoration Committee, which I Chair, is tasked with considering the location for the National Famine Commemoration.

In September 2024, my Department wrote to the Chief Executives of all local authorities in Munster requesting an Expression of Interest to host the 2025 National Famine Commemoration.

Two responses were received and these are currently being considered by the Committee. The location for the 2025 National Famine Commemoration will be announced at the earliest opportunity.
