Towns and villages throughout Ireland act as social and economic hubs, providing employment and supporting businesses. Making these local towns attractive to shoppers is important and buying locally sustains local economies and supports the growth of jobs and vibrant communities.
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the restrictions around retail and other impacted businesses and sectors, the Local Enterprise Office launched a ‘Look for Local’ campaign in 2020 to encourage businesses to see what local suppliers had available to them, particularly when at the time there was ongoing international supply chain issues. As part of that campaign, consumers were encouraged to Look for Local when they were purchasing gifts, services and experiences at Christmas.
Town Centre First is a Government policy published in 2022 that aims to regenerate towns across Ireland, creating town centres that are viable, vibrant, and attractive locations for people to live, work and visit. By investing in town centres, Town Centre First enables towns to thrive and to reach their full potential, while functioning as the service, social, cultural, and recreational hub for the local community.
Implementation of the Town Centre First policy lies with the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage and the Department of Rural and Community Development.
