246. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if he has engaged with Bus Éireann regarding that company’s rule that prevents drivers over 70 years of age from driving school buses, considering that this rule often results in the cancellation of school transport; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Official from my Department, the Department of Education and Bus Éireann have been engaging for some time on this issue.
As the Deputy will be aware, the new Programme for Government commits to the carrying out of an independent assessment on the feasibility of removing this rule. I will be discussing with the Minister for Education and Bus Éireann how best to fulfil this commitment as quickly as possible.
