The Minister for Health is supportive of the digitisation of patient and medical records as evidenced by his approval for the Digital for Care: A Digital Health Framework for Ireland 2024-2030 which was published in May 2024. See: www.gov.ie/en/publication/0d21e-digital-for-care-a-digital-health-framework-for-ireland-2024-2030

Digitisation of patient and medical records will be achieved through the stepwise approach described in the Digital for Care strategy, that describes the need to deliver a national patient app, a national shared care record, whilst investing in longer term enterprise level Electronic Health Record systems.

This work will be augmented by investments in related programmes of work such as Electronic Prescribing, Telehealth and Virtual Wards, Digital Identities, and Standards & Interoperability.
