125. To ask the Taoiseach and Minister for Defence if his Department and agencies under the aegis of his Department have policies on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) within the Department and those agencies; whether training has been provided to staff on the use of AI; if his/her Department has used AI, including large language models, in the preparation of legislation or statutory instruments; and if he will make a statement on the matter. In line with the National AI strategy and the National Cyber Security Centre’s (NCSC) Cyber Security Guidance on Generative AI for Public Sector Bodies, my Department continues to keep the use of artificial intelligence for business purposes under review. Work is underway on the development of a policy for the use of AI within the Department. A number of staff are enrolled on formal training courses in AI and further training on the use of AI will be provided to staff this year.

The use of artificial intelligence, as with all enabling technologies, will be considered on a solution by solution basis. Any such considerations will be discussed and a risk assessment conducted as appropriate.

No Departmental functions are currently assisted by large language models, natural language processing or generative AI products. I can confirm that my Department does not use artificial intelligence software in the preparation of legislation or statutory instruments.
