1037. To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality for an update on the proposal contained within the draft Programme for Government to “expand existing prison capacity by 1,500 spaces”; her views on whether this will be sufficient capacity over the lifetime of this Government; how this increase will be staged; and the additional/alternative measures that were considered in addition to increase prison capacity and or reduce prison overcrowding. As the Deputy will appreciate, the incoming Government has set the priorities in the draft Programme for Government. Work to progress these commitments will commence on the appointment of the new Government. The Deputy will also appreciate that, as a result, timelines or operational details on policy proposals are not available until work programmes are agreed.
