When travelling from the UK to Ireland with a pet dog, the owner must ensure the following:

  • The dog must be microchipped.
  • The dog must be administered a rabies vaccination, after being microchipped.
  • The person must wait until the appropriate immunity has developed, as stated by the datasheet of the vaccination given, which must be at least 21 days after the primary vaccination is given, before travelling.
  • The person will need to have an EU health cert completed by a vet in the UK. If the person is in possession of an EU pet passport for the pet, this can be used in place of the EU health cert.
  • The dog will require a tapeworm treatment (Echinococcus multilocularis) no less than 24 hours (1 day) and no more than 120 hours (5 days) before the scheduled arrival time of the dog in Ireland.
  • The person must complete the advance notice portal (found on pettravel.gov.ie) in advance of the trip, in order to set up the required compliance check upon arrival.
All of the information regarding the requirements for pets travelling to Ireland can be found at www.pettravel.gov.ie.

If an individual is bringing a dog into Ireland from the UK, it must be treated for tapeworm by a vet between 1 and 5 days before arrival in Ireland. If the individuals means of travel are delayed and the 5-day window has been exceeded, the individual should get a second tapeworm treatment completed.
