Based on records held by the relevant District Veterinary Office, when Nitrates calculations are being finalised after year-end, an allowance is made for herds restricted due to positive TB. The allowance is granted for the number of days the herd is restricted as number of animals in the herd during this period is not fully within the farmer’s control. The allowance is calculated up to the applicable legal stocking rate limit for the farm. i.e. 170kg livestock manure nitrogen per hectare for non-derogation holdings.
As part of Ireland's bovine TB Disease Eradication Programme, cleaning and disinfection must take place before a TB restricted herd is de-restricted. Cleaning and Disinfection is required for all breakdown herds. Manure and slurry on the holding should be stored for at least two months after the reactors are removed prior to further use. Pasture on which manure and slurry has been spread following storage should not be grazed for at least 4 weeks following application.
