The Sheep Improvement Scheme is funded under Ireland’s CAP Strategic Plan. It provides support to sheep farmers for carrying out actions that improve animal health and welfare in the sheep sector. It builds on the progress made by the Sheep Welfare Scheme (SWS), which ended in 2022.

As per the Terms and Conditions of the Sheep Improvement Scheme, participants classed as a lowland flock who selected Parasite Control (Faecal Egg Count) as one of their chosen actions must take and submit to the laboratory for testing, a minimum of two Faecal Egg Counts per annum between 1st of June and 30th September on lambs. In the case of hill flocks, participants in the Sheep Improvement Scheme must carry out one Faecal Egg Count on lambs for the presence of worms within four weeks post weaning.

The person referred to by the Deputy was initially determined to be a lowland flock type at the time of their Sheep Improvement Scheme application, however following a request for a review of their application their flock type has now been determined as Hill Flock based on their most recent sheep census return. Correspondence has issued to the person concerned and the payment correction will be processed soon by my Department.

The person named submitted three applications in July under tranche 4 of the Young Farmer Capital Investment Scheme of TAMS 3, which closed for applications on 6 September 2024.

All applications in a given tranche must undergo an initial assessment before a more detailed technical check is carried out in the local office prior to approval issuing to eligible applicants. It is a regulatory requirement that all applications received under Tranche 4 must be evaluated, ranked and assessed and this can only take place after the closing of the tranche on 6th September. Unfortunately, applications cannot be approved individually or on a rolling basis as they are submitted.

Administrative checks of the 5,684 applications received in Tranche 4 are currently under way. Once this process is completed all eligible applications will move forward to the ranking and selection process.
