The Department of Agriculture Food and the Marine facilitates lawful commercial trade while ensuring that live animal transport is carried out in compliance with legislative welfare standards.

Once animals are traded to a destination in another EU Member State, under EU law they become a part of the national herd of that country. However, the animals always retain the identification number from their Member State of origin so that traceability throughout their life across the EU is retained.

If at any stage subsequently they are further traded onwards, the onward trade of these animals is the responsibility of the authorities of the EU member state exporting the animals to the non-EU country.
