233. To ask the Minister for Housing, Planning, and Local Government the number of fallow deer, sika deer, red deer and muntjac deer in the country; how many of each have been killed here in the past five years; and the method of killing and the locations, by county. [39683/24]

Fallow, sika and red deer are all widespread and abundant in Ireland. Muntjac, which was illegally introduced into the wild in Ireland, is present in very low numbers in a limited number of counties.

Deer are hunted with rifle in accordance with S.I. No. 239/1977 (Wildlife Act, 1976 (Firearms and Ammunition) Regulations, 1977).

The table below sets out the number of Fallow, Sika, Red and Muntjac deer shot under a Section 29 licence over the last five deer hunting seasons, 2019/2020 to 2022/2023. Returns for the 2023/2024 season are ongoing.
