As the Deputy will be aware, under the Garda Síochána Act 2005 (as amended), the Garda Commissioner is responsible for the management and administration of An Garda Síochána. This includes the distribution of resources, including the Garda fleet, across the various Garda Divisions. As Minister, I have no direct role in this matter.

However, to be of assistance I sought the information requested by the Deputy from An Garda Síochána and have been advised that all vehicles in the Garda fleet are operated up to the manufacturers durability limits or uneconomic repair, irrespective of age. A comprehensive Service Repair and Maintenance programme is in place to ensure that all vehicles are operating to manufacturers specifications.

The tables below set out the number of Garda vehicles taken out of service due to high mileage in 2022, 2023 and to date in 2024 and the number of new Garda vehicles added to the fleet in the same period.

Vehicles removed from the Garda fleet due to high mileage in 2022, 2023 and to date in 2024:

- Removed
2022 126
2023 113
2024* 111

Vehicles added to the Garda fleet in 2022, 2023 and to date in 2024:

- Allocated
2022 282
2023 271
2024* 287
*2024 figures are as of 30 September, information supplied is operational and subject to change.

The purchase and allocation of vehicles by An Garda Síochána is made on the basis of identified operational demands, the availability of resources and is reviewed on a continual basis.

For the Deputy’s information, detailed statistics relating to the Garda Fleet are publicly available on the Garda website at the following link: www.garda.ie/en/about-us/our-departments/finance-services/finance-fleet-management.html
