I recognise the significance and sensitivity of the coronial investigation process for loved ones of the bereaved and that delays in coronial investigations can cause distress for families of the deceased.

Coronial investigations are however the responsibility of coroners who are independent of my Department in the exercise of their statutory death investigation function. Neither I, as Minister, nor my Department, can interfere with a Coroner in the exercise of their statutory function.

I am however advised that Dublin Coroner has assembled all the documentation that is required to schedule the inquest, but is aware that there is a Report in preparation from the Inspector of Prisons and intends to await its publication prior to holding the inquest.
