2023 was a difficult year for tillage farmers with the yield of all cereal crops below their five year average. Also, the wet weather this spring resulted in significant delays in getting crops planted.
As a consequence of pressure being experienced by tillage farmers, in April this year I announced a commitment to seek a €100/ha payment for all crops planted for this harvest year. This was to give confidence to tillage farmers to plant crops this year and to give them confidence in the future of their industry.
I am currently working with my colleagues in government to seek the necessary funding.
