The current legal framework permits antiparasitics to be sold without a prescription.
I am at present considering new Regulations to up regulate all antiparasitics so that they can only be supplied on foot of a veterinary prescription issued by a veterinary practitioner. This will reinforce the central role of professional veterinary advice in the determining the necessity and suitability of anti-parasitic products.
In preparing for drafting the Regulations, there has been extensive stakeholder engagement over the last 4 years and all stakeholder views have been considered to find the appropriate balance of routes of supply, medicine availability and cost while meeting our obligations in EU and national legislation.
