A coroner is an independent office holder who performs a public service by making inquiries into reported deaths. The Coroner Service comprises a network of coroners located in districts throughout the country.
To ensure the integrity of the coronial function, investigations into deaths by coroners must happen without interference from any third party. While I recognise the significance and sensitivity of the coronial investigation process for loved ones of the bereaved, neither I as Minister for Justice, nor this Department, can interfere with a coroner in the exercise of their statutory death investigation function.
However, upon receipt of correspondence from the people concerned, my officials made enquiries with the Dublin coroner. Pursuant to Section 17 of the Coroners Act 1962-2024 the coroner within whose district death occurs must be the coroner to hold the inquest. There is no discretion available to depart from that legal obligation.
I hope this information is of assistance.
