The Local Improvement Scheme (LIS) supports improving rural roads and laneways not usually maintained by local authorities. As part of Our Rural Future, the government is committed to ensuring that the LIS is funded in the future.

While my Department funds the scheme, local authorities are responsible for the administration of the scheme. They are also responsible for the selection and prioritisation of roads for inclusion in the Scheme. Each local authority is allocated funds under the Scheme and submits their priority lists to the Department for funding approval. Only when works have been completed is any funding disbursed to local authorities.

I have included a table below outlining the total amount allocated and disbursed during the period 2019 – 2024. It should be noted that local authorities have until November 2024 to complete works and submit their final claims for payment under the 2024 scheme.

I also wish to clarify that this money is capital funding.

Year Allocation Spend
2019 €10,000,002 €9,780,604
2020 €10,000,000 €9,774,374
2021 €20,999,999 €20,818,098
2022 €22,000,002 €21,413,176
2023 €27,739,932 €26,789,992
2024/2025 €40,100,000 n/a
Total €130,839,935 €88,575,244

The Community Involvement Scheme is funded by the Department of Transport who will separately provide information on that Scheme as requested by the Deputy.
