240.To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport the grants available for island communities to set up a fuel service to meet the islanders' fuel needs following the changes made to the International Maritime Carriage of Dangerous Goods code, which affects how the fuel can be accessed on Inis Meáin. My Department does not provide any funding for domestic ferry services to the islands.
While it is not under the remit of the Department of Transport, it is an objective of this Government to provide the necessary supports for our off-shore islands so that those communities can continue to live, and thrive, on the islands. The Islands Programme of the Department of Rural and Community Development supports island communities by providing subsidised ferry, cargo and air services between the islands and the mainland to ensure the continued viability of these communities.
My understanding is that all service contracts are reviewed on a regular basis to ensure the best outcomes for islanders and the Deputy may wish to pursue the matter directly with that Department.
