Eligibility for a GP visit card is based primarily on residency and means under the provisions of the Health Act 1970 (as amended). GP visit card eligibility was expanded last year under the GP Agreement 2023 to all those earning up to the median household income and, on the basis of age, from all children under 6 years to all children under the 8 years. All persons aged 70 years and over are also eligible for a GP visit card. The below table provides the number of GP visit card holders at the start of each year from 2019 to 2024 and as of July 2024.
2019 - January | 503,329 |
---|---|
2020 - January | 524,494 |
2021 - January | 529,842 |
2022 - January | 525,918 |
2023 - January | 535,741 |
2024 - January | 630,475 |
2024 - July | 684,227 |
