The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI), an agency under my Department's remit, is the central competent authority for enforcement of food legislation in all food businesses after the farm gate, including slaughterhouses and the plant in question. The FSAI discharges that responsibility through a variety of official agencies under service contracts, in accordance with the Food Safety Authority of Ireland Act 1998. The inspection and approval activities are part of the official controls, governed by the detailed requirements of Regulation (EU) 2017/625. The official controls on this slaughterhouse are assigned and supervised by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (as detailed in SI No 22 of 2020).
The FSAI has met and engaged with, and continues to engage with, DAFM in relation to the ongoing investigation into the matters highlighted in the RTE programme.
