As the Deputy will be aware, under the Garda Síochána Act 2005 (as amended), the Garda Commissioner is responsible for the administration and management of An Garda Síochána, including training and HR matters. As Minister, I have no role in these independent functions.
However, to be of assistance I sought the information requested by the Deputy from An Garda Síochána and have been advised that the table below sets out in tabular form, the number of indoor and outdoor ranges, excluding shooting ranges owned by the Defence Forces, that armed Garda personnel have access for training purposes.
Number of Indoor Ranges | Number of Outdoor Ranges |
---|---|
3 | 2 |

We have all been shocked by the recent loss of life on our roads, and concerned by the worrying increase in road fatalities after many years of progress in making our roads safer. Road safety is a shared responsibility and one which this Government takes very seriously.
As the Deputy will be aware, in accordance with the Garda Síochána Act 2005 (as amended), the Garda Commissioner is responsible for the management and administration of An Garda Síochána, including all operational policing matters. As Minister, I have no role in these matters, nor can I direct the Commissioner with regard to them.
I can, however, assure the Deputy that the Government is committed to building stronger, safer communities and a strengthened, well-resourced Garda Síochána is central to this policy. This commitment is demonstrated by the unprecedented provision of over €2.35 billion to the Garda Vote this year, which is allowing for sustained and ongoing recruitment and investment in new equipment and new vehicles. Road traffic legislation is enforced as part of the day-to-day duties of members of An Garda Síochána, as well as through a programme of high-visibility road safety and enforcement operations carried out in partnership with other state agencies, in order to make our roads safer for all.
I am informed by the Garda authorities that the below table is a breakdown per district of the number of vehicles seized by Gardaí in County Tipperary for driving without a valid licence during the years in question.
Clonmel | 33 |
---|---|
Thurles | 27 |
Nenagh | 24 |
Other | 14 |
Total | 98 |
Please be advised that the figures are based on incidents occurring from 1 January 2022 to 16 July 2024, inclusive. All information is based upon operational data from the Pulse system as was available on 17 July 2024 and is liable to change.
Vehicles seized or detained relate to those detained under s41 of the Road Traffic Act.
