The Supports for Survivors of Residential Institutional Abuse Bill 2024 was approved by Government on 16 April 2024 and published on 22 April 2024. The drafting of the Bill was informed by consideration of the final report of a survivor-led Consultative Forum, which was supported by professionally qualified facilitators engaged by my Department, alongside other submissions received from survivor groups, in consultation with relevant stakeholders. In addition, following the completion of the Pre-Legislative Scrutiny process in December 2023, the recommendations contained in the Joint Committee’s report were also considered prior to the finalisation of the Bill.
The Bill will enable the provision of certain ongoing supports to survivors of abuse in residential institutions and it is intended to progress the passage of the Bill as quickly as possible.
