I met with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer at Chequers on 17 July.

We discussed relations between Ireland and the United Kingdom and agreed that the time was right for a reset of the partnership.

We discussed the unique partnership between our two countries, and agreed to put in place arrangements to strengthen it further. This included a commitment to annual summits at Taoiseach /Prime Minister level to deepen and reinvigorate cooperation.

We also reaffirmed our shared commitment, as co-guarantors of the Good Friday Agreement, to its principles and institutions, and to furthering prosperity and reconciliation in Northern Ireland.

In that context, we also discussed legacy issues, including the British Government’s intention to repeal the Legacy Act, and the case of Pat Finucane.

We discussed global issues and agreed on the need for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and urgent action to address the humanitarian crisis there, and for the release of all hostages.

We confirmed our support for Ukraine in the face of continued Russian aggression.

I welcomed the Prime Minister’s commitment to closer cooperation with the European Union.

We will meet again in Dublin on 7 September.
