The Programme for Government, "Our Shared Future", committed to establishing four Citizens' Assemblies, namely:
- Biodiversity Loss;
- The type of directly elected mayor and local government structures best suited for Dublin;
- Drugs Use; and
- The Future of Education.
The first three Citizens’ Assemblies listed above have been completed. The relevant government departments are now drafting detailed responses to the Dublin Citizens' Assembly and the Citizens' Assembly on Biodiversity Loss. The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Drugs Use held its first meeting on 13th June to examine the report of that Citizens' Assembly and will report back to the Houses of the Oireachtas on its findings. The Government will respond in detail to all three reports in due course.
The Government has not yet considered the question of establishing a Citizens’ Assembly on the Future of Education. Any decision to establish another Citizens' Assembly will need to be subject to a Government Decision and resolutions of both the Dáil and Seanad éireann.
