In accordance with both the Programme for Government and Housing for All commitments, the Government provided for Tenancies of Unlimited Duration through the Residential Tenancies (Amendment) Act 2021. All new tenancies created on or after 11 June 2022 will become tenancies of unlimited duration after six consecutive months in occupation under the tenancy, without a valid notice of termination having been served.
This change provides greater security of tenure to tenants in the private rented market. My Department does not hold any details in relation to the number of people who have avoided becoming homeless due to this legislative change.
