It should not be possible for the owner of a vehicle to be charged motor tax twice for any period, even if they renew the motor tax for that vehicle prior to the expiry of their existing motor tax.
All motor tax is paid in advance for 3, 6 or 12 months from the first day of a month until the last day of the month in which the tax expires. The motorist in this case may be confused by the date that appears on the bottom right hand side of all motor tax discs. This is the date the disc was printed and issued, it is not the date on which the motor tax is paid from (which is always the first day of the month).
The motorist concerned can contact my Department or their local motor tax office, if they paid their motor tax there. Full contact details are available on www.motortax.ie.
