Under the Teaching Council Acts 2001-2015 the Teaching Council is the body with the statutory authority and responsibility for the regulation of the teaching profession in Ireland including the registration of teachers in the State.
The Teaching Council is the professional standards body for the teaching profession, which promotes and regulates professional standards in teaching. The Council registers teachers under the Teaching Council Act and there are five routes of registration. To be admitted to the Register of Teachers, applicants must meet the requirements for registration as set out in the . My Department has no role in the registration of individual teachers.
In order to be eligible to register under Route 4 – Other, a person is required to hold a special education teaching qualification obtained outside the State. These applications are assessed by the Teaching Council to ensure that they meet the requirements for Special Educational Needs teaching in Ireland.
Applications under Route 4 – Other (Qualified outside the Republic of Ireland) will continue be assessed by the Teaching Council to ensure that they meet the requirements for Special Educational Needs teaching in Ireland., including that referred to by the Deputy. It is a matter for the Council to determine if the qualifications are such to qualify to be registered under Route 4.
I would advise the individual referred to continue to liaise with the Teaching Council and follow any advice or guidance that they may give on the matter in accordance with their statutory role, and the legal framework established by the Council for the regulation of the teaching profession.
