Bus lanes provide priority for bus-based public transport, making bus travel faster and more reliable and encouraging more people to switch from private cars.

The current Road Traffic (Traffic and Parking) Regulations, as amended, allow for fare-carrying taxis to operate in bus lanes when in the course of business. This exemption is the basis that taxis can be hailed on the street and are a form of public transport.
