Irish driver licensing law operates within a framework of EU law, which sets out the driver licensing legislation with which all Member States must comply. The format of driving licences, categories of vehicles, and the standards to be met in driving tests to qualify for a licence, are all set at EU level.
All EU-issued licences are recognised in Member States. A holder of an EU Member State licence who moves to Ireland can drive on that licence until it expires. The licence holder will then need to exchange it for an Irish licence.
My Department does not have access to individual applications. All enquires relating to driver licensing are handled by the Road Safety Authority, through the National Driver Licence Service (ndls.ie, 0818 700 800/+353 21 462 4810).
