208. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport in relation to fines levied on students who fail to present their student travel card on bus and rail services, if the National Transport Authority provides an appeal mechanism where this can be waived if they can later show that they had simply forgotten the card; and if he would support such an initiative if one does not already exist. As Minister for Transport, I have responsibility for policy and overall funding in relation to public transport; however, I am not involved in the day-to-day operations of public transport.

The National Transport Authority (NTA) has statutory responsibility for securing the provision of public passenger transport services nationally, and for decisions in relation to these services in conjunction with the relevant transport operators.

The issue raised by the Deputy is an operational matter for the NTA. Therefore, I have referred the Deputy's question to the NTA for direct response to the Deputy. Please advise my private office if you do not receive a reply within ten working days.
